I despise Harper as much as anyone, but is this really a result of his awful policies or more so because he happened to be Prime Minister during the 2008 global economic crisis?
Let’s not fall into the same trap as the “Fuck Trudeau” crowd, the PM isn’t a supreme all-powerful overlord who has full control of the economy. They don’t even have that much direct power over the Canadian economy, let alone global factors like the 2008 recession or the COVID-19 pandemic.
Don’t forget the 2016/17 OPEC crisis
Trudeau was PM by then, though?
There’s ample reason to hate Harper without considering his economic decisions, but his economic decisions were made on an ideological basis, not an economic basis. He was a disaster.
Definitely don’t disagree Cons are an economic nightmare, but I just think any PM in 2008 would have similar stats, regardless of party.
I think this is a “fight fire with fire” type thing.
Conservatives won’t respect us for being above the shit that they do.Oh, you think JT had a bad economic record? Well then let me show you this. Oh this happened during the 08 crisis? You indicated that we weren’t making allowances for crises.
If you told people the best way to pay off their debt was to cut their income and then try to cut some of their expenses, they’d laugh at you. Somehow Conservatives have been able to peddle that narrative for 40 years and, although they have never made it work, provincially or federally, they still have people believing them that the first thing to do is cut income (taxes). I voted for Harper the first time in hopes that maybe he had a different take being an “economist”. Did not vote for him again.
Would like to see trudueau jr on those as well now that he’s out, mostly to see how he compares to his dad
Probably not great considering the last few years.
Maybe not but it would be telling in how the data was detoermined. Kind of like a barometer
