Researchers say 64 people in Quebec donated their organs after receiving medical assistance in dying between 2018 and the end of 2022, representing 14 per cent of all gifted organs in the final year of the study.
Not many organs overall really.
Lead author Dr. Matthew Weiss, medical director at Transplant Quebec, says many of the 245 people referred for donation withdrew from the process over concerns about some aspect of it, but there’s no detailed data about their reasons.
He says some may have decided not to donate after learning they would be required to receive MAID medications in hospital instead of at home, so that organs could be retrieved quickly after their heart stopped.
I respect their wish to not pass in a hospital. It’s too bad they have to choose one or the other.
The only other countries where organ donations after medical assistance in dying are legal are Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands.
This is interesting and does make me hope we watch this closely and don’t let the wrong insensitives get involved.

We really need to find out what reasons they would have had.
Outside of “religious beliefs”, which would have sent them to hell for suicide anyway, there aren’t any overwhelmingly good reasons to not donate your organs after death.
Such a shame, really. Each person had the potential to save many other lives.

Given this I don’t blame people making an already difficult choice deciding to have their final moments at home.
That’s a fair point, but still speculation unless they ask the patients.
Whoa whoa whoa so you’re saying in all of Quebec about 450 people donated their organs? Barely more than 1 a day? That seems incredibly low
I see that California did about 1500 with almost 5x the population so I guess I was wrong about thinking that’s abnormally low.
