Meta post I’ve decided to make. I enjoyed the unixporn subreddit a lot when I used reddit more. I enjoy customizing my linux de as much as the next nerd.

But you definitely shouldn’t use racist slang to refer to the process.

To be clear, I didn’t know the origin of the term ‘ricing’ until fairly recently. I was chattimg with my friend and used it to describe my de setup. They informed me that apparently it’s from car customization, and is a pejorative against generally asian men who customize their car to look like a racecar.

After learning this I was sad to realize just how engrained it is in linux de customization culture. I personally have stopped using the term, and I would ask everyone here stop as well.

Is anyone really complaining, or just afraid?

There is a difference between “I am not comfortable help me” and “you need to do as I say”.

Being open to other points of view is only good right?

And yet that is not the vibe, at all. I have only said … you do you. White knighting and telling others they are doing it wrong suppresses what should be a chill creative club.

Yes. The op is bothered by the use of casual racism. Many people in this thread are saying that racism bothers them. Does racism not bother you?

Being open to other points of view is only good right?

No some points of view are not worth considering. Bigotry and racism, just like the viewpoint that its good to eat your own excrement, are view points of no value.

White knighting and telling others they are doing it wrong suppresses what should be a chill creative club.

Wanting to not be exposed to racism and racist slurs is not white knighting. Just because this specific racial slur doesn’t target me doesn’t mean I am unaffected by it. It is called empathy. Even if I was a sociopath I would be against all racism because I don’t like to experience racism happening to me. I would be against the racist term “Ricer” because I don’t want to normalize any racially slur because I may be the next target.

Racists and offensive language are suppressive and any community supporting those things is not chill.

Curious they used the term “white knighting” because that term is forever tainted by gamergate chuds using it to disparage or dismiss anyone calling out misogyny and has a direct lineage to the term SJW. 🤔

I am not looking to open your closed mode of thought. However, I’m afraid I have to disagree that rice is racist. I have experienced actual racism; not imaginary, not potential, but real and dangerous, the full-throated embodiment of human hate. It is awful and traumatic.

Some folks making cool desktop customizations and calling it rice as a cyberpunk / counter-cultural hacker term is neither racist nor awful.

Flip-side, this entire thread makes rice even cooler, now that there is a segment of people who have said “booo”, it will be all but entrenched.

            Personally, I like /c/unixporn/“Mah Desktop $ Shot”

“I refuse to change my offensive language despite people telling me it is offensive. I think I am cool because I am using abusive language to make people feel uncomfortable. I am proud of being exclusionary and my self worth is tied to being offensive to others.”
