Do any of the other countries have Native communities living in Third World conditions with either bad water, little water or even no water?
I always find it hilarious that anyone ranks Canada in any First World metric when everyone just glosses over the fact that portions of the population live in complete poverty by design.
Canada rank 31 in potable water. Not great but notable countries with worst ranking include:
Greese
Norway
Japan
USA
Switzerland
Italy

It’s hilarious when you think of the fact that most of Canada is nothing but large areas of freshwater … especially in the province where I am from ‘Ontario’, an indigenous word that is in reference to ‘great lake’ or ‘sparkling water’, generally a reference to ‘fresh water’
It’s also frustrating in northern Ontario where we are literally surrounded by fresh water lakes and rivers, yet it is the same part of the country where many semi-remote and very remote communities either have little water, dirty water, tainted water or just no water.
Freedom is not well-being. We’re free to express frustrations, demands and desires, however government doesn’t feel obligated to act on it… So scores are probably right (for the moment) but it does not translates to human rights charter being fully implemented/supported by government.
Imagine how bad others have it.
Canada needs to have a higher representation of indigenous representatives in government like New Zealand does however they still have issues with inequality.
Many indigenous people run, and win, under the Conservative and Liberal banner. You have clearly made your points regarding your feelings on those two parties, but you are also saying we need more representation.
What steps are you taking personally to see more representation in Government regarding indigenous people? Would you vote Conservative or Liberal to see more of that representation?
The freedom you’re looking for costs resources. They’re more about that $0, feelgud freedom.
USA is in free fall
We’re behind countries with proportional representation once again. We the electorate must heavily pressure the 2 big parties to pass electoral reform.
How does USA score so high? It should be trending into transition territory since citizens have been detained without due process and people disagreeing with the administration disappear or having funding revoked to keep them hushed
How does USA score so high?
The period studied was June 1, 2023 – May 31, 2024.
Long before Trump was re-elected.
Ah, next period will be interesting
I’m pretty skeptical about this result, but if you think about a perfect 100 points not as a marker of true ideal freedom and prosparity, but rather a degree of freedom from blatant easily quantifiable oppression (in other words reverse the numbers and mark it as the oppression index), then the result does sound more reasonable.
Canada has made great strides and is ahead in many ways, but that’s because so many major countries have such high degree of public oppression. We’re one of the best in a quite dystopic world, which really isn’t saying much when you are looking at ideas, and which also means we still have a massive amount to go.
Doesn’t really feel like it.
Why do you think so?
Housing crisis; cost of living; people in the vancouver DTES getting tormented by the police; indigenous people generally not treated well
I can see your point about the housing crisis in a way. It restricts people’s ability to have a place to live and, shelter. But does that really affect their freedom? Cost of living also is difficult but it’s not really preventing you from being “free” in the sense of the word. Or is it? I may be missing the point.
I’m completely ignorant to policing issues, especially in Vancouver. I generally don’t agree with law enforcement having too much control.
In my region of BC the reconciliation stuff has been very well received mostly. Indigenous people are a big part of the community and their culture has expanded into the school system, their businesses are successful. Housing projects for indigenous have also been going on constantly.
Both of our 2.5 parties bleed money without significantly improving quality of life for people at the bottom.
Just a note but I don’t believe Freedom House is the most accurate report (Look at Germany and how they are handling certain types of protests). But it’s sfill useful in many aspects, but it shouldn’t be the sole source of truth
wait until after election. Something tells me that two main contenders are eyeing to curb some freedoms to various degrees. Arguably Conservatives being on a more authoritarian track with Liberals tracking not too far behind

What could possibly be telling you that a Carney led Liberal Government would lead to an Authoritarian Government?
