I find that the images I generate using AI that I like the most get the lowest vote scores, while the ones that I am even ambivalent about posting get the highest scores.

Examples: These two (Despair & Colors) were my most intimate ones. They are reflections of internal experiences I’ve had my whole life, followed by decades of introspection to imagine these images. They also took me the most work to generate, and if anyone in MS is reviewing what I make, they might be concerned with how hard I worked to make these and the troubling prompts I used. Anyway, I posted them immediately after generating them because I thought they were great. Still, they only have a score of 28 and 36, respectively.

On the other hand, I sat on posting the Electric Slide for a day or two, yet it was the best received with a vote score of 166. The He-Moon I was almost certain was going to be in the negatives, yet it has a score of 150. Both of these probably took 15 mins max each to generate, but are my top scoring images. We can argue that humorous ones will likely be better received, but the humorous ones I like the most did not score anywhere near as much. Drahkermit still makes me laugh (lol), yet has a score of 48.

Anyone else, or am I alone on this? Also, do you have any relevant insight to share?

Btw, I’m not critiquing anyone or complaining at all. I don’t really care for my scores other than to assess how others liked them for guidance on what to post. I’m really just trying to figure out why this phenomenon is occurring and why. I find it curious that there is an apparent mismatch, and I think it would be an insightful lesson for me to help understand things better :)

Note: The scores noted here are what I saw at the time I posted this.

Well, you feeling strong about something doesn’t necessarily mean other people also care about that thing.

And the pictures you called Despair and Colors are something you need to stop and think about for a moment. And social media is fast, people don’t do that. They’ll upvote something that is colorful and catches their eye while scrolling past. Something obviously funny on a glance or things that have to do with pop-culture and are agreeable. What also works is to mix two things that don’t go together. That’s easy to understand and a pun lots of people get immediately and they’ll upvote you for that.

I don’t think a (normal) social media platform will ever become an art gallery.

Well, you feeling strong about something doesn’t necessarily mean other people also care about that thing.

As someone that enjoys writing and photography, this is the truth of all art. The artists feelings for a thing only matter if they resonate with the viewer. Visual art is just another form of rhetoric, the means of persuasion, which was originally verbal. And what resonates with an audience depends on the context. So, your idea that social media is fast and people aren’t willing to put in the time really get it, is spot on.

Conversely, I’m sure OP could do something to facilitate longer viewing times on their art. He’s not completely helpless in this regard. Like, maybe make a community for more thoughtful AI generated images. Idk…but the idea would be on doing art, creating compositions that have depth and meaning and are worth more than a glance. That is, after all, what traditional artists do after they learn the mechanics.

Actually…photographers have groups where they critique each other’s photographs, and it’s how they improve. Something like that for AI generated art would be worthwhile, I think.

Sure. Presentation has a lot to do with how art is received. But I think on platforms like Lemmy there is only so much you can do. I mean… It’s kind of the correct approach. You can post images and a preview shows up in everyone’s timeline. People can vote and engage in a discussion…

Still, I think I’m often in the wrong mindset. I open the app, my brain is looking for that short dopamine rush while scrolling through things but it’s news article, cute picture of an animal, AI art, someone’s project, next news article about war… I don’t think I’m really paying attention or embracing anything, most of the time. It’s just too much and quality of the posts is very mixed so I make split second decisions if I even pay attention at all.

You’re probably right. A forum or blog would be something that encourages people to spend a bit more time on a given subject. Or something like a magazine with curated content. Or we just don’t mind that Lemmy / social media doesn’t encourage people getting into the correct mindset. The added exposure could be worth it over the smaller audience in a dedicated forum. And it seems to reach some people…

Your first two I also like better, but they’re not meme-y like the others.

I’ve found the same to be true of my posts as well. But you do face fans, I’m one of them.

As for posts I’m trying to post daily to help the community grow. I mix it up between things I think will be popular and things that mean something to me.

Upvotes follow a weird logic. On reddit, quite often a long comment about something I know about got no upvotes while a shitpost joke in a one line comment got over 1000 upvotes.

People do not necassirily judge the quality by voting.

It’s similar as nobody remember who invented the computer mouse or the digital tablet but everyone remembersk when apple started to sell them

Moreover, a topic important to you might not vibe with evenyone, go to the underground club and see people living their best life listening to weird music in a small place, but most people would preffer Taylor Swift or Rammstein

I think you’re putting too much emphasis on these scores. I notice myself that I liked your two higher score ones, and not the others. For whatever reason I never ended up seeing the others. Now, what matters to me and I think a lot of others here is the sharing of the content. Look at your average between all those. For Lemmy, you get great average engagement for just straight image posts. If thats what you are after you are doing great.

Thank you for the response! I agree that the scores don’t truly matter. What I’m wondering is why there is a mismatch in what I appreciate and what the community as a whole appreciates. I guess another way of asking is, “Am I different, and if so, how?”

Oh, that I don’t know how to answer. But you cook up cool stuff regardless so I would just take Princess Bubblegum’s advice: “People get built different, we don’t have to understand it. We just have to accept it.”

      👉 Paradox of the Actor

I read the first few pages and a few reviews of it. It sounds super interesting, and I’m left with many questions. Now, I have to read it. Thanks for the recommendation and the compliment 🙂

I don’t follow AI image generation for the art really. I’m looking for things that I do not think I could recreate myself. Things like the electric slide image simply resonate with how I feel about dancing; I’d rather do anything else. Styles that may resonate elsewhere or in a traditional style are far less appealing to me. If it looks like anything I could get at random, I am less interested too. I’m not very emotionally invested though.

Oh yeah anything out of the “formula” often doesn’t fair well I find.

I’ve passed over sharing a lot of pictures I personally like because I know others probably won’t be feeling them.

Your stuffs great though, and I enjoy how diverse it can be.

What “formula”? I would try to throw up as much as you can, its not like up or down votes mean anything other then liking the AI image. These are not our works, and instead of getting attached to them we would be best served enjoying the funny pictures.

That’s what I’m learning, though I find nothing wrong with that. Even if there are a few that still like the more pushy stuff, I’ll be fine sharing them.

I would love to see the things you generate but don’t share. You’re one of my favorite on here. Also, if it seems unwelcome, we can just create a new community and share there.

      Thank you very much!

I didn’t feel the Despair one, but did like the Colours one (didn’t vote for either). I didn’t really feel either of the Eletric Slid or the He-Moon ones but have liked some of your other work.

I have felt that some stuff that I posted would be better received that some of the other stuff, It seems you have to hit the meme just right

I’d probably just post whatever you have fun posting without a lot of concern for whether people like it. They can rank it however they want.

I mean, I post things that I like making. Sometimes they’re not what people necessarily want, but we aren’t at the point that the community has such a firehose of images that the mods have to try to throttle it down.
