I’ve often said that I wouldn’t mind corps skimming my data, IF they gave me a cut. But they don’t, and that’s why I’m on Lemmy, Pixelfed, support FOSS, use script blockers, and other methods to minimize my exposure to them, and yet still participate is this lovely intarweb we’ve created.
That’s an hilarious add-on. Like a google Geiger counter. Thanks for sharing it.
And singular of data is datum. ;-)
To which I say, No Gods No Masters!
same. Someone I know, this morning, said “oh I just got on threads”, and “everyone is there”, and worse “the only reason I know about it is because you told me.” The thing is, 1. Threads is a Meta project, 2. I told them about it in the context of this huge discussion on the fediverse about defedding from corporate social media, in which the VAST MAJORITY agree that federating with corp social media is bad plan. sigh.
Wow, a lot in this. Thanks for posting!! I want to watch progress in this area, as it’s exciting to think that, indeed, URI cases could be significantly reduced in number and severity with the right measures. In my clinic we opted to use multi-stage HEPA filters in each room, and space patients such that the air circulates thru the filters sufficiently between patients. Everyone is also masked.
Yee, gads, what a dirty link. Thanks for the impulse. I hope your day is cozy.

I do seem to remember the effect from before 2001. But why was it invented? I mean sometimes it’s kinda cool, but others it can be downright deadly. ;-)
Yay, and thank YOU!!
Edit: I went over and looked. So the point of dark mode is to make things easy on the eyes, and to reduce interference with melatonin production. Melatonin production is blocked by blue and white (because it contains blue) light. The best option for dark mode is black background and orange type, as it provides good contrast with minimal interference with melatonin production.
The classic example is the White / Blue of Facebook - designed, no doubt to keep users awake, and clicking. I noticed sometime ago, that screen invert in iOS yields, White --> Black, and Blue --> Orange. Technically speaking any light will reduce melatonin production to some degree, some researchers would say, even being able to see your hand in front of your face, like at all, will do it. And the biggest effect is from Blue and White light. :-)
Yay Anti-War Citizens of Canada!! Welcome Dear Maria!
Agreed. That particular ‘strip mall’ has a huge parking lot out front, such that one couldn’t readily sort of zip off the road and into the building. Tho’ within 6 mos, a year another car drove into a shop, further down the mall, in a much easier spot. I’m thinking bollards, big HONKING BOLLARDS, might just help.
Early in the pandemic there was a driver who launched their vehicle into a restaurant. And when I say launch, I mean up over an approximately 2 1/2 foot high curb. All the way into the restaurant, the driver was about to put 'er in reverse and back right out again. A quick thinking patron reached into the car, turned the car off, and pulled the keys. Someone described the driver as ‘unusually calm’. So yeah, striking without warning from the shadows seems fair.
Desktop, fwiw. I do all the things, e.g. red/orange/yellow light from sunset to sunrise. I now think of Melatonin as a darktime hormone, rather than a sleep hormone. Have you ever noticed, sometimes people are awake in the darkness, and it’s not even spooky or scary,… necessarily.
The REAL MVP!!! Yay Rimu!!!
I signed up, no problem. There is a bit of funky behavior (I clicked on the Pie logo, and it changed to the word, “Logo” haha), but overall it looks sharp. I"m trying to figure out where to make suggestions - I’m a dark screen person, and it’s got way too much white and blue - colors that suppress melatonin production. I’m mighty fond o’ me melatonin.
And whom should we blame for the mis-information that caused these deaths?
When you say, “a few”, I’ll note that at last mention it was 60% prefer defederation of threads.
Ditto for me, as well. It’s just a matter of establishing those ‘niche’ communities on the Fediverse. The Fediverse has broken thru 10M users. We’re getting there. Onward!
