Bad content feels much much worse to me. E.g it is so infuriating to see those fake prank videos with tons of likes and positive comments. It kills my hope in humanity every time… At least an ad could be for some interesting legit product. 🫠

Not much. Somebody created a community called The_Donald (which wasn’t even active) and the admin didn’t immediately delete it. Then people that hate Trump demanded that their instance defederate because of that.
Defederating from extremistic or spammy instances should not be hurting regular users.
What I find annoying is when defederation happens because of individual communities on otherwise good instances. E.g. when that drama about shitjustworks started, because somebody created an empty The_Donald community there…
That’s more or less the idea, just that you can use one account for all those forums. And sometimes interesting posts from other unknown forums show up in your main forum.
And they often use those huge emojis in their comments.
What’s Fedilab?
If one instance gets too big they could just ignore the standard and start adding random tweaks to it. And all the others would eventually have to adapt to that or risk becoming irrelevant by being incompatible with the big instance.
Why does that site have to look like a Geocities site that some 12 year old girl made…?
Exactly!
The loss of potential growth opportunity… And all the potential negative effects happen anyway, no matter if you federate or not.
Both those things literally happen with 100% certainty and instantly when you defederate…
Meta is not going to go away or fail somehow just because everyone defederates from them!
What good does that do the small instances? And how does that harm Meta?
All that happens is:
That’s more a loss for us.
I really don’t understand this logic… There is literally absolute no advantage by not federating with Meta.
Why would users prefer the free Fediverse MORE if it’s not federated with the “big and good” Metaverse? If anything it just drives them away into Metas arms, because the non-Meta instances are small and all the stuff is on Meta anyway.
Defederating is just the worst case result, but instantly from the beginning… How does that do any good???
I am kinda curious to see how federating with it would actually work. I.e. what kind of content would actually end up in my “All” view, the usual facebook trash or actually interesting stuff? And would there maybe be interesting communities on it?
The mobile apps seem to be… https://github.com/pixelfed/mobile-app/issues/31
I think the issue with this is that posts from other instances would have a huge delay. Basically the mods would have to appove EVERY single post.
