I mean, it’s just a piece of paper for competing an otherwise random set of extracurricular activities. MIT students do memes all the time. Well, they use to. I think the administration is trying to crack down on fun stuff.

It’s interesting none the less. One explanation for the plateau is that many people signed up for difference instances, either because they didn’t know how federation worked or they disagreed with the instance and wanted to be somewhere else. Not as many people necessarily went back to reddit as the numbers might suggest.
With the drama of independent instances, I would not want my org’s availability held at the whims of some rando. Better to pay for your own hosting and federate. As long as people understand the official instance will probably ban any bad press.
