  • It sucks but this isn’t new. The wiki page for Canadian Passport also notes other countries which often aren’t listed, including: Israel, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

The reason why is because other countries might not accept a passport with those countries listed as place of birth. China has stated they will deny entry to anyone with Hong Kong, Macau, or Taiwan listed as a country on their passport. So you can put Palestine as the place of birth on your passport, but you might not be able to travel to any countries which don’t recognize it as a country.

For Israel and Palestine, it depends on your year of birth and city of birth. Certain years and certain cities are accepted. Tel Aviv, Isreal is allowed Jerusalem, Isreal is not. Jerusalem, Palestine is allowed if you were born before Isreal was created and it was still a British territory.

International geopolitics is complicated. Canada doesn’t want its passport holders to be banned from entry into other countries over wording in the passport.

  • This keeps the US corpos out of residebtial real estate here right?

Kind of? The definition of a residential real estate in the law is narrow. It’s essentially a single detached home. Property that is divided into units aren’t considered residential real estate. So foreigners can still buy townhouses, duplexes, apartments, etc and rent them out for exorbitant prices.

Property that is considered “recreational” is also fair game. What is a recreational property? If it could be listed on Airbnb, it’s a recreational property. So if a single detached home is nearby a ski resort, it’s also fair game for foreign buyers.

Foreigners are also still allowed to buy residential property if they intend to live there, or have a Canadian visa for things like work, school, etc, or are married to someone who isn’t affected by the ban.

If it kind of sounds like this doesn’t do much to deter foreigners from buying property. It’s because it really doesn’t. But don’t worry! Even before the ban, foreign buyers only accounted for 1%-6% of purchases depending on the province. The greedy corpos buying up all the residential real estate have always been Canadian.

  • Staples Canada has posted a job opening related to this, one is for a Regional Services Manager-ServiceOntario. The posting says the successful candidate will be responsible for “Monetization of ServiceOntario traffic” and will need to “Drive sales and profit results related to ServiceOntario traffic.” A statement from the premier’s office earlier this week stated that impacted ServiceOntario employees will be given a chance to continue employment with Staples Canada.

The article gets worse the more you read. Not only is the government privatizing a government service, but they’re giving it to an American corporation, using canadian taxpayer money to upgrade this corporations storefronts, and the corporation is turning the well payed government position into a crappy retail job.

Please don’t let Ford do this to my healthcare.
