  • Intel Arc GPU. Had to enable a few modules, reboot, debug, follow the jellyfin docs for writing to some configs, reboot, didn’t work. Follow the error messages which are pretty much useless, get pointed to stuff that isn’t relevant. Finally someone on a forum had a good reply where they told me I have to download the entire linux proprietary firmware directory, extract the i915 folder from it, and plop it in my firmware folder and reboot. Then everything loaded and hwacceleration worked.

    • Ryzen 2700X on a gigabyte B450i

    • Arc A380

    • 2 mirrored 4TB HDDs and 1 12 TB HDD, luks encrypted and on 2 zpools (I have an “unsafe” mount path for data on a single drive like media)

    • removable flash drive with boot partition and main SSD keyfile

    -Zwave dongle

    That’s it.

I can run everything I need to on it and my home internet is only 100/30 still because I don’t live in a city, so 2.5gig networking isn’t worth the cost. a380 does all of the hardware transcoding I need at a fairly low power. It isn’t as good as just getting a newer NUC, but it was cheaper and a fun project.

Also doing a full renovation, so KNX will be connected for home assistant to control my lights and things and my smart home stuff will probably balloon.

  • For sure, but the point is that it isn’t integrated into homeassistant.

For many people, they want to do everything from homeassistant. You can always have kludged together solutions. I edit my configs with VIM and backup to my central backup location via an automation. However, this is doing things outside of homeassistant that many people find inconvenient.

  • I use a similar setup, but use a USB for my boot drive that has the lvs partition encryption keyfile. I find it much handier since my computer is not near my server. I can boot and then walk upstairs and it is ready, and remove the USB later.

Then there is no way to brute force the decryption or get a password out of me. Also, when the USB is removed and put in a safe place, there is no way to modify the boot partition or UEFI either.

Then I have a password encryption on my data harddrives that I don’t know the password to, but is on my password manager.

The thing about being paranoid about this stuff is that I probably focused on the wrong thing. A smash & grab is completely protected against, but that is like a 0.1% chance anyway and a 0.1% chance on top of that 0.1% chance that it would be targeted enough that they would even try to decrypt it.

Full disk encryption is really only usefully at all for an unpowered system. Network hardening will probably take care of 99.99% of attack attempts where encryption is 0.01%.

Even for a laptop, if it gets stolen in public, it is still running and can have the keys extracted or break into the running system if someone really wants to hack it. They wouldn’t even try to reboot and break the disk encryption probably…

Too much info, but I guess I am just rambling about how dumb my approach probably is 😅

  • Being able to find, download and seed old series and movies.

Nobody ever stays seeding anymore because big private trackers make it all about ratio and small ones simply don’t have to userbase to support “old” series.

Back with RARBG I had every season of that 70’s show and had around a ratio of around 50. For old scooby doo, red green show, Mr. Rogers, Tom & Jerry, some cartoons from when I was a kid, etc… Now it is difficult to even find a lot of that media, much less have a good ratio from it on smaller private trackers where it might get 1 download per 6 months or so. There is absolutely no incentive for keeping around older media. If you want to get in good in trackers, you HAVE to pump and dump the most popular torrent of the week once a month or so to get a good enough ratio.

For example, on SceneTime I have a ratio of like 0.1 because it simply doesn’t have users. However, they assign bonus points based on how long your torrent is seeding, if I am not mistaken, so my site “effective ratio” has gone up to 2 because you can spend the bonus points to add “upload GB” to your account if you are keeping alive “unpopular” torrents.

  • Everyone. Everyone. I mean everyone here misses the biggest plus for WhatsApp compared to pretty much every other messenger. Signal is pretty much the only one as “simple” as it.

We are all too big of privacy geeks to realize what non-tech-savvy people go through with these.

    • Sign up process is dead simple from your phone. It is literally as simple as putting in your phone and PIN. Once you hit the “choosing server” on people using matrix for the first time, you have already lost them. Completely. The exact same thing happened with mastodon and lemmy. People who had no idea about how federation and decentralization were instantly lost

    • Backups: backing up is a process that the users have to do on a lot of matrix clients, or not available. People want to be able to simply move to a new phone by installing the new app, logging in, and being right back with all of your old messages. Even on signal you still have to restore the automatic backup. If you don’t have that file, you are screwed. I can’t remember if Element will sync your messages automatically to a new device.

Those 2 things and population are literally the only thing that the average person actually cares about outside of other people being available on the platform.

  • Not in my opinion, “economic turmoil” is if you are worried that speculative gambling numbers are too low so the poor serial investors will miss out on short term profits and if you are worried that taxes on people making over 10 million a year are rising to a small fraction of what the poor have to pay. That’s “the economy”

I don’t think the housing crisis and cost of living crisis is even represented in many goverments outside of pan-party press talking points to appease “the poors” that are worried about it while doing little to nothing.
