The problem is that they are thousands times bigger than us. All our voices will be drowned out, in what we all know, is an ad-driven post contest.
We can whine and cry but their predatory algorithms will just chew on our content and spit it back in, filled with ads, misinformation et al.
That’s why we dont want to federate with threads/facebook.

Like we’re more than a million users, let it grow organically, not in some Reddit meme-crap way (or fusioning with fucking Facebook, guess how well that will go yeah).
But I have a question, I have blocked threads on my instance, I mean if there are no shenanigans (there will be ofc) are my instances safe? How does it work say if a user from my instance goes to lemmy.world? Isn’t it quite important that all servers block them off?

Well, my point was that even is he pays hosting fees (for example) the big job is managing it all, which we (mostly? all?) do for free. If a company wants to ear money hosting Lemmy, it’s gonna be either some big thing (host your own Lemmy for 5€/m) or one big instance like world, but it would cost a lot having paid people running it.
Guess my point was that he can pay a bit per month, but it won’t guarantee anything at all. He’s probably better off joining a medium-big free instance in the short medium and long run.
Now, this is just what I think :-) !

There is also just using one of a thousand free instances.
If you think a meager subscription from your part could pay for about anything (dev wise), I think you are wrong.

To add on that, I’m trying to figure out how people can easily find those small volume niche communities, and it seems like it’s a hassle.
So I set up a community on my server : https://lemmy.mindoki.com/c/sharingiscaring@lemmy.mindoki.com
Post your small community there, and I’ll have a user sub to it.
Why?
Because if at least 1 user on a server subs to a community (on another server) then that community will show up when filtering with All (All + new should show even small posts, at least sometimes).
If this is a good idea, maybe everyone running a small (read: low volume) server could do this to really get Federation going!
