  • IDK, if both my very-much-not-so tech savy siblings, mother, and even an idiot like myself can all pick up and use it with very few, if any, hiccups, then “user expierence” on Linux is…

Not hard. Or, well, in general as well. The more I hear people go “Learning Linux is hard” and hear them out, the more I’ve come to realize they’re actually trying to say “Unlearning Windows is hard”. Which is absolutely true, considering 95% of people use Windows basically out the womb…and then they keep using it/put up with it no matter what unless you’re like one of my old professors who didn’t “need windows” for his work (and used Mac all the way), or like me and several others who got tired of Windows constantly messing up on me–or being invasive of your privacy, bloated, all of the above. Take your pick–enough where I just said “you know what, no. I have options besides basically throwing dice at the wall with this. They can’t be that bad.” (spoiler alert: they weren’t bad at all).

And again, unless you’re throwing yourself off the Linux deep end from second one and trying to build the system from scratch or compile Gentoo by yourself, learning it isn’t this grueling, impossible task. Plus there’s free resourses that can make it even simpler for you if you want to more than learn as you go. There’s growing pains, yeah, but no different than learning anything new in life

Gotta disagree. Even with following a handful Linux groups on here, there’s several other topics and discussions that quickly dominate my feed, from games, to music, books and comics, to pets doing adorable things, to anime, and TTRPG stuff (…and Star Trek. Now that’s something i can’t seem to escape on The Fediverse and makes me feel just a tiny bit left out because I’m not really into lol). Then again, it’s up to you what you see since the user is in full control of what they allow or block in thier feed.

So curate until you barely see any Linux, if that’s what ya fancy.

  • Wouldn’t call it harder, exactly (then again, I’m most familiar with XFCE, so kinda biased here lol) since most everything is grouped together either in the settings menu or panel prefrences, and you can just drag and drop whatever you downloaded from xfce look to the desktop apperance and icon list to add them to spice up your desktop, whereas in KDE, which I love, don’t get me wrong. It’s a tinkerer’s paradise, the settings for X, Y, and Z are kinda all over the place

  • Guessing because the one’s who downvoted saw this as “low effort” that doesn’t tell them anything, really. (There’s no mention of any DE, or what they did to customize it…it’s just the terminal and a request for a wallpaper, really). FWIW, I can see it’s Uwuntu (i think…) would be nice to see the whole desktop tho

Btw, OP, or really, anyone, how’d you upload the image? Everytime I’ve tried it it says the image is too large.

  • I personally don’t see it as racist in the context it’s used (to me, context and how something is used is everything), then again, when I first heard the term a few years back, it was in the context of an acronym: Racing Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements. Nothing racist about that, I mean…I see several cars owners, racing or otherwise, tricking their rides up with spoilers or annoying loud exhausts all the time. All ethnicities, not just strictly asian. It might have come from a racist thing*, and if it did, that doesn’t mean that that’s what has to define it for all time.

I also agree with tables; you can’t exactly choose a “nicer” alternative for something everytime a couple of people get offended by a word. It’s just not feasible, IMO. IDK, I was raised with the mindset of: There’s going to be people in life that are going to take offense to something you do or say even if you didn’t mean to offend in the slightest.

*it could have, but I’m not entirely sure personally. I checked out the wiki article you linked, and find it odd that when originally looked up the term RICE on wikipedia, there was no racist conotations at all (and i know this because i often used to refer to that article when i explained what the acronym meant to others), or if there were, it was a footnote, but now it’s front and center. Not saying you’re wrong and this is some revisionist piece at all, just noticing that, is all. Like I said, this very well could be the original meaning.
