If they don’t cache your search history to your identity, which they claim they don’t, then I’m not sure why that’s a problem.

Read better please.
My worry with them is that they aren’t defederated from hex-bear, but I suppose that they’re already updated to version 19, then I can hop aboard and block the ibstance
I don’t want everyone to defederate with threads, I just want my server to defederate with threads, or else I’ll leave and find another one. But it seems like looking at this post that there’s about 80% of people that agree with me here.
Threads is part of the Fediverse now. Literally all it would be is joining an instance that you agree with.
That we are federating with Threads and are going to put our information directly into their servers.
That’s the thing, though, you can’t just quote-unquote “scrape activity pub.”
You have to pick every single instance. Believe it or not, not all data is just on every single instance. It’s usually cached by users connecting with different instances.
It really comes down to whether you believe that Facebook is scraping the entire internet right now or not.
I’d prefer to not directly feed my information into their servers.
Honestly I dont think they are data scraping the entire internet. There is no evidence to believe they are.
I dont want to manually feed my data to them on a silver platter.
Meta doesnt need a short leash, it needs put down.
Id love for an official members only lemmy.world poll
Lemmy.one had a user only meta community for this purpose.
Honestly, I think they see the idea of the Fediverae a threat, and want to embrace, extend, extinguish.
Well, they could gather that, then skim through your posts, and then look at all the other ways they’ve gathered your data, like any of the Facebook trackers on various other websites, then create a shadow profile of you with all of the collective sum information they have.
And that’s assuming you don’t already use Facebook or messenger, in which case they basically have everything anyway.
It also assumes that they haven’t purchased any data from data brokers to create these shadow profiles. Having an IP is actually pretty bad, all things considered, when you have a trove of information
This is exactly the case. There are so many more users than threads that even though we aren’t directly being fed their algorithm, what makes it to the top of our posts will be content that are at the top of their algorithm.
It’s Facebook’s algorithm with extra steps.
I wish lenny made it as easy to migrate as Mastodon did.
Right, but we have a chance here to keep things fragmented as opposed to coalesced around Facebook
So my understanding is that the way Federation works in the activity pub standard is that information is not cached on a server unless it interacts with another piece of content. It’s basically a web of users, and one user cannot reach far on that web. That would mean the easiest way to collect mass amounts of data is to sicc their users over here by the millions.
Although if my understanding is incorrect, I would be happy for someone to educate me.

A good read one one concern. Another is privacy. Genuinely, thank you for being curious.
That’s the problem, though, given the cost of indexing it. I’m not sure there’s a single open source search engine that doesn’t rely on some sort of proprietary software. My philosophy is that if the product is free, you likely are the product.? We would almost need a donation-based search engine to get around that, which would likely would not be sustainable.
