BtW, Spare a thought for Penn’s PR team today trying to work out what to say about the Medicine Nobel Prize going to one of their professors and another professor they kicked out for “not doing faculty-level research.”
Glad to see Katalin Kariko won. A lot of people told her she couldn’t do her experiments and she just kept at it. Ten years ago she was kicked out, fired for keeping at it

The fact big labs are replicating and still haven’t disproved it makes LK99 more likely to be real - a disproval would take longer and carry lesser reputation cost if they get it wrong (higher rep cost if they confirm LK99 is working and turns out it isn’t)
- The original finding was written by experienced chemists, not physicists. There are some problems where solutions are searched for in the wrong directions.
- Our current generation of YCBO-based high-temperature superconductors started out as low-field, low-current, highly strain-sensitive, and over 30+ years of engineering development, these now carry >1000 amps/mm^2 in fields as high as 10T (although these numbers trade off against each other). It’s a matter of time.
I guess you could say that even if it has low electric and magnetic capacity it still will have a giant impact on industry. But not all industries.

I wonder how many labs in the world are doing the same thing. Probably at least 5 in California alone.
From the Google translation it appears they were successful in the replication, with expected measurements, however did not observe Superconductivity as of yet. I reckon if it is completely successful the government will clamp down any further information.
It’s interesting that so many are in a hurry to doubt. Give it a couple of weeks for tries at replication and you’ll know for sure. I suppose the first to call BS wins the “I told you so” award. Whereas, if true, it’s a Nobel.
