Interesting. I’m on Mastedon, but not active. I’m curious if I’ll notice any changes by next year.

To add to this, the best course of action is to:
In our case, we already know that reddit is going to announce its IPO eventually. Assuming they don’t do something to piss off users sooner than this, this will likely be the next major event to drive people to check out Lemmy. People who checked it out but fell away will already have accounts, and new people will check it out for the first time. If we do steps 1, 2, and 3 well, when step 4 occurs the retention will be higher each time.–
To buttress this point I’d like to point out that this software we’re all running is version 0.18.
I’m not even inviting friends an family yet. I’m still troubleshooting my own experience. I’m not even able to use Lemmy on Firefox on my desktop for some reason.
I’d like to add to this that there’s no particular benefit to defederating preemptively instead of defederating in response to a problem.
Also, is this a problem we need to deal with? I think it matters for Mastodon instances, but I don’t think Threads users will be interacting with Lemmy.
I think the solution is for each instance to decide whether to federate with Threads or not.
The only way an attempt to coopt the Fediverse wouldn’t happen world be if the project failed. If this system is going to work, major players will want to participate, and they’ll want to accrue power and dominate over the system. Creating tools to establish boundaries and checks is fundamentally the point, so I think we should all strive to understand and contribute to the development and administration of institutions we like. And if we do that, and also compel our governments to impose regulations on big tech they WILL come up against limits to their power.
Is there a community for gently abused memes that I can post this to?
Thanks for sharing this, this is really interesting.
My hope is that when Reddit announces their IPO, more people will start talking about wishing for alternatives. I hope this motivates a few people who checked it out and left and lots of new people to take a first look, and when they do I hope they find an already active community that produces enough content to retain more people and generate more content.
