@collapse_already yeah Reddit also tended to mistake explanation for agreement and savagely downvote it.
It’s me, livus.
I like to post articles, but I find them myself. I’m a human.
If you like international and eclectic news, come and join me at @worldwithoutus (Link for Lemmy = worldwithoutus or !worldwithoutus).
I’ve also started helping out at @worldnews,(Link for Lemmy = worldnews or !worldnews).
@collapse_already yeah Reddit also tended to mistake explanation for agreement and savagely downvote it.
Fast food franchises always charge more in poor areas, I wonder if dynamic pricing would charge poor people more as well.
@Fubarberry yes I saw this a lot too. Highly upvoted confidently incorrect comments, with the real answer or an answer debunking them with links to factual sources less upvoted.
Happened to me as well.
@etuomaala I’m sorry that you are having this experience, but your own description of your motivation makes it sound like bad faith.
If there was an article on a 40°heatwave, with a photo of people on a beach. And I commented “That’s very hot”.
If you asked me do I mean 40° is hot or do I actually mean the people on the beach are hot/sexually attractive. Because you have met people online before who objectify women in photographs.
That would be bad faith on your part, because instead of taking my comment at face value in terms of the obvious meaning, you would be immediately suspecting me of some other, far worse meaning.
Going around asking people who criticize a nation state whether they are also racist is similarly bad faith. That’s why people in here are being so hostile.
@etuomaala in that case, you are not posting in good faith.
This article is about people protesting the actions of the government of Israel. It’s reasonable to assume the top level comments in here address the article topic.
@etuomaala normally, yes.
If a word has more than one meaning but one of the meanings is a synonym for the subject which is being talked about, it’s a safe bet that this is the intended meaning in that context.
I think maybe a dictionary might be better here than just a translator.
@etuomaala I’m not @LinkOpensChest_wav but I would like to chime in.
But how would I use this to prove that “state” and “government” are generally synonymous in most practical contexts?
You wouldn’t need to, because we’re not talking about “most practical contexts”.
We’re only talking about contexts in which people are protesting the actions of a government.
@NegativeLookBehind kbinDevlog. Personally I feel pretty chill about it.
I don’t think Ernest owes us anything. It’s his early development project, he didn’t specifically invite me here. I just showed up one day, and feel grateful to be able to come along for the ride.
@NegativeLookBehind pretty sure this outage was unscheduled, as Ernest usually warns us
At this point, I think I’m just going to create an alternate Lemmy account to avoid these blackouts.
You should. I have accounts all over the fediverse, probably one of the reasons I don’t get angsty if my main on kbin’s down.
Hens hate rats.
But maybe that doesn’t apply to hens with 4 legs.
Very cool.
I saw the word “survive” and for a second I thought we were talking about Threads, the postapocalyptic movie that scarred a generation.
I need more coffee.
@Fitik yes, but I did. There is something about kbin commenting that must strip it out again so that if you are on another instance it doesn’t link right. I had the same problem with your link that you have for mine.
I typed @mike@flipboard.com
At mike at flipboard dot com
@Gamers_Mate that works for me too but it’s because we’re both on kbin.social specifically.
Thanks, that didn’t work for me. Try @mike
@limelight79 that does sound like vote-to-disagree. I’m with you there, I don’t like it. Downvotes should be reserved for things that don’t contribute, like trolling and racism etc.
I also think it’s incredibly rude if two people are having an amicable discussion and one downvotes the other one. It’s like trying to punish them.
On kbin, votes are not anonymous, which has had the effect of making people downvote more sparingly. (Also, although we don’t federate downvotes from other instances so we can only see downvotes from kbiners, it also means our downvotes on other instances are pointless).
@tigeruppercut thanks. That was underwhelming. I don’t know why they post it so often!
There’s definitely a “downvote if you disagree” ethos here.
Is there? That’s a shame.
I’m on kbin and we don’t federate downvotes so I don’t see any of the downvotes the lemmings are giving to each other (or to me for that matter). Last time I hit “view on original instance” on lemmy.world I thought they might be developing that culture but I didn’t realize it has become rife across the Lemmys.
@setsneedtofeed this! We are building something here. Not sure where you post but I’m adding you to my follows so I’ll see your OC.
@oxideseven Not offhand as it’s more something I know from experience but here are some news reports on it from my part of the world:
Poorer pay more
McDonald’s make meals different prices in different areas
And here’s a study from the US that found they charge Black neighbourhoods more.
Edit: looks like chain stores do it with fresh fruit and vegetables too.
