Why not turn it into a Desktop app via Electron or a similar solution?
This is a feature for me that makes me inclined to try it. I really don’t like Electron.

I am not a fan of Java. However, I think that you are 100% correct. This is a potentially very useful stack to have available and I hope that the two projects track together well.
This project has potential for high velocity development that Lemmy will never be able to match, purely because of the languages. Rust is, factually, slower to develop in than Java, even for experienced devs. Add to that the greater population that is comfortable with Java, and you have a recipe for really pushing interesting things and innovating quickly. Possibly establishing a relationship somewhat like Debian Sid to Debian Stable. It could also be interesting to have some low-level, Rust modules that are shared between the two when Lemmy gets to 1.0 (API stability), if there is something that is more optimally implemented in Rust but that would introduce more coupling.
Not a fan of Java but the way that I see it is that other people coding in Java means less demand for me to. The more compatible open-source implementations, the merrier. Great work so far and I look forward to seeing where your project goes.
Welcome!
What are the penalties for not showing up?
Mandatory breakfast at Tim Horton’s for 90 days.
Lots of solid recommendations. If you additionally want to image the cd, you can use dd.
The two are inseperable, unfortunately. Every commercial social media company exerts control over their users in numerous ways, including bots ane opaque algorithms. Given their hisory of everpthing from complicity in genocide to actively taking part in political influence campaigns, there is next to no chance of them acting in good faith, if federated. They will simply use their significant resources to try to control and pollute the fediverse.
The proper strategy is not to play the corpo game. Mass commercialization and corporate entities pushing to monopolize is the root cause of the problems that we have with the www. The only way to “win” is to exclude these known bad actors and prevent them from reshaping this place into another cesspit filled with ads and more coordinated efforts to subvert free societies.
Threads has 100s of million users. Even if only ½% of those move to the Fediverse, that’s still a huge win.
Gonna start paying mods, admins, and instance runners? That is huge amount of extra work that they would need to put in. Slow growth is sustainable, rapid growth is very risky to platform viability.
*Any assuming good faith users.
Considering the company’s history, I am more than a little perplexed at anyone thinking that there is significantly higher than a 0% chance of the effort being intended in good faith.
I’ve been contemplating AR display arrangements. Something like this would be a great direction for my use case.
Best of Luck to you. I find that a creator is indelibly linked to their creation, while they are still living (and their beliefs definitely color it long after they are dead). So, while Rowling draws breath, I endeavor to give her neither profit nor advertising. I do absolutely understand the draw that the fandom has, despite the very problematic aspects of the setting - I’m not going to shit on what people enjoy, though I think that acknowledging the problematic is important.
More than anything, I see that there are a lot of extremely creative people in the fandom. This is easy to prove. You just need to look at all of the cosplayers over the years that have made their own costumes from scratch. I hope that some channel that creative energy into making something better and more inclusive (that doesn’t fund hate against trans people).
