I’ve yet to find a modern use for usenet as I’m not in the habit of downloading everything as it comes out, nor of looking for content within a few days of release. Often I’m looking for 2-5 year old content or back catalog, and usenet has been a uniform landscape of incompletes, even with two blocks on independent providers (or they were when I bought the data blocks).

I don’t have time to fuck with managing a seedbox to make ratios and community participation bullshit (looking at you, abt). I don’t even have time to fight incompletes on a usenet block. Let me drop a Benjamin in your “donation” box every couple of years and I’ll cover part of the server as long as I can find what I need, when I want it, in the quality I’m looking for.

I have subscriptions to a few of the big boys through legal cross-marketing deals; it’s still better to know that my shows will be waiting for me on my server if and when I ever get around to watching them.

If I spend half an hour to find an implement a workaround (because finding ways around YT’s advertising is not my hobby) then I’d have to watch 60 unskippable 30 second ads to break even, every single time they upgrade their cat-and-mouse. I don’t watch that much youtube in a month, probably not in 3 months.

But Meta can already do that through user accounts or through a honeypot/passive instance, correct? All public conversations are open, as are all public user profiles.

The only solution is to fight it and kill it.

That’s like saying the only way to get out of being hit by flying debris is to eliminate all wind on the planet. As much as we like to think of Threads as some corporate being, it’s not. It’s a hundred million people that are made of meat and have day jobs like you and me - the wind - and a few million bots and controlled accounts which attempt to influence [whatever their master wishes] - the debris. The debris is already here, and it’s people too - just people with nefarious or profiteering intent. It (debris) happens whenever there are enough people (enough wind) to stir things up.

Cutting yourself off from people is the only way to prevent it because it’s an inherent function of humanity.

My issue is that it’s an inefficient use of human resources because it clutters the interface. If you’re looking for the answer to a question, you have to post in multiple places and/or search/review multiple communities to see if the question has already been answered. For low-traffic communities the replies get split, suppressing topic participation. For high traffic communities, stories/links that get posted to the “same” community on multiple instances clog up personal home pages and - in the case of large participation - clog up the top feed.

Again, imho, there should be a way for communities to aggregate or sync across instances and be shown as a single feed, like a symlink to multiple folders that is treated as a single location for end users. I realize this causes moderation concerns. I still think its better for the participants.

Oh no, a new discussion board is neither as robust nor as polished as one with over a decade of use and revision.

Most of the complaints are just whining that Lemmy isn’t a perfect drop-in replacement for his love of endless, constant time wasting on Reddit. OTOH, the issue of multiple, nominally identical communities on Lemmy is a true weakness of the platform (imho, of course).

It’s open source, so it’s dead simple. Just go to the git repository and download the code and a compile it for your system. When it doesn’t work, it will throw an error and the simplist thing to do is just to a crash dump and then go back an manually update the bytes in the machine code that called the wrong register and boom you’re golden.

I was a bit baffled by your post because it seemed odd, but it’s the second time today I’ve encountered someone mentioning it. It appears that lemmy.today is a no-dv instance; I presume it’s a server switch option. The rest of the instances I’m on all have up/down voting, and kbin, of course, has boost/up/down. Not that there’s anything wrong with it but, just so you know, it’s a feature of your instance and not lemmy-wide.

You’re missing OP’s entire point. The two platforms are completely different. You see, Twitter is a microblogging platform, but Mastadon is a microblogging platform. They’re as different as Word and Pages, or Excel and Sheets, or Photoshop and GIMP. Just entirely, utterly different in every way, with the sole exception being that they are functionally identical. Making people go scrounging over ten subs is the ideal way to reduce your subscriber base. It’s also a shitty model for a link aggregator and a terrible way for people to ask questions and get answers. Not all of us have ten hours a day to scroll through multiple communities on the same topic, with the same article posted 8 times with 8 different discussion threads and some goober posting the same inane comment on all eight. It’s a waste of time.

There are perfectly good reasons for similar communities with a different focus to co-exist. Making the Fediverse harder and more Byzantine to use is a terrible reason to want it, though.
