+1, with an additional condition: when Meta inevitably tries to co-opt the activitypub spec and modify it in incompatible ways that only benefit themselves they need to be defederated immediately.

On one hand: great, federated tech is catching on.

On the other hand: fuck these clowns, they’re not participating in good faith. If Meta wants to join the fediverse they need to interoperate fully with other instances instead of using activitypub to poach fediverse users.

I’m 100% convinced Meta is pulling a classic embrace, extend, extinguish move here.

Twitter has been the medium of choice for a bunch of fields for years now. You don’t see a lot of academic communication there because much of it is private to followers only to avoid harassment. Followers only Twitter started being a pretty normal thing maybe 10 years ago in response to right wing harassment of women, academics and anyone not conservative white and Christian.

I see mastodon as an opportunity for the education community in particular to take back the public forum they had before twatter went to shit.

IMO the best outcome for everyone is universities offering hosted mastodon service to their students and faculty the same way they offer hosted email. That makes Twitter-style discussion possible in the academic sphere without the profit-motivated problems that traditional social media is saddled with.

As irrelevant as flipboard is I’m glad to see tech adopting mastodon. Twatter and Reddit demonstrated the risk inherent in any single entity owning a public platform.

Now if they’d just let me run the damned client on more than one device so I can reply to messages from my tablet.

Yeah. I’m not a huge fan of the format but a lot of people seem to like it. Academia and infosec seem to do most of their posting there (twatter and clones) and I don’t see that pattern changing right away if at all.

I posted by accident before I’d written everything so that’s probably just the edit landing first on Lemmy.

This did come through by the way, but it took an extra 15-20 minutes before the comment would actually load in my client. I got the reply notification immediately but couldn’t load the comment until a bit later.

I find it leaves me with too many odd sized windows that aren’t terribly useful. I think it’s one of those things that bother some people and not others 🤷‍♂️

For example, the terminal along the bottom in OP’s screenshot wouldn’t help me all that much, it’s too small for me to do much with unless I’m just looking at a very small piece of a log or a very small status display. Most of what I run tends to be about the size of the window in OPs upper right so I just stack and use the GNOME overview or super+tab to switch. I find the GNOME overview model really, really helpful.

I wouldn’t mind laptop tiling if I could have windows that maintained their size and (relative) position on screen but shrunk down to a miniature version when they weren’t focused. Sort of a hybrid between an overview and tiling, where the window expands to it’s original size and position when focused.

I mean, I think we should probably treat it the same way we’d treat any site that has content like that. Defederate from it, obviously, and then report the site to your national authorities who handle sites with that material. I’m sure the FBI would love to know that site exists so they can have a nice chat with the operator.

I’ve toyed with tiling on GNOME as well. It’s a fantastic feature when you can easily toggle it off and on.

I don’t often use tiling on my laptop, it doesn’t usually do what I want at the time, but it’s really helpful when I’m plugged into a couple of 32in 4k displays.
