Love the extension, but it’s a shame not all the alternate front-ends work. The Reddit ones stopped working a while ago, the fandom one is unreliable, lots of other ones are just a tad too slow.
Official site is here: https://join.piefed.social/
Beta test is happening here: https://piefed.social/
It looks quite neat. I like the emphasis on making things easy for admins and using more tried and true technology compared to Lemmy’s bleeding-edge (that sometimes causes issues). Here’s hoping it’ll be a great alternative to Lemmy.
This is really cool, thanks for sharing!
Usually I would agree but in this case it’s important to provide context for people using the platform. According to the post Firefish’s admin practically abandoned it for months now and was radio silent and now hasn’t replied to the core team in over a week, someone had to say what’s going on.
Everyone knows how hard managing these things are, and it’s often a thankless job, but this sadly seems like another example of someone taking on a leadership role then bailing for whatever reason. The owner should’ve let someone else handle firefish.social if they didn’t have the time.
Oh hey, I didn’t know Gaiman was on mastodon.
Thank you.
It doesn’t seem like you understood why people are upset though. Currently the only way to discover new communities and widen your network is by browsing All. Dare I say most Lemmy users do this. Making repost bots actively harms “real” post discoverability and makes browsing content difficult. Not to mention most reposted content is very superficial, and most of these text postd have zero value when there’s no interaction.
I was not expecting so many “if I want to see Reddit stuff, I just go to Reddit”.
No, we’re saying if you want to see Reddit content you should host an alternate frontend like https://teddit.net/ or go to a dedicated place to view that content. Hosting it on Lemmy makes little sense because…
You are stressing out every Lemmy instance by making so many posts and comments a minute
There’s no way to opt-in, so a lot of these posts are making its way to people’s feeds without consent and people aren’t interested in seeing it, which is why most people are upset
It’s actively making the new user experience worse because it feels like there’s too much botspam and someone who’s brand new won’t understand what’s going on.
If there was some way to opt in it would be very cool and a great project, but the way it works now does more harm than good
Isn’t Anna’s Library piracy? Bookwyrm is just a book tracker ala goodreads which only has metadata, providing links to free downloads of books is illegal and would put them under fire.
If you want a legal alternative to what you’re describing, check out OpenLibrary. You can borrow books there and use it as a Goodreads alternative.
This is gore, do NOT click it.
Just went down and never came back up. Nobody knows where the admin went, which sucks.
If we do have some instances running ads, wouldn’t that run counter to the goals of the Fediverse?
Not really. You can always switch to another instance, and there’s a big difference between running few ads to stay afloat and being a for-profit company like other social media. The Fediverse would still be by the community, for the community even if some instances run ads.
What is the monetary cost associated with an individual hosting an instance? Can these costs be covered sufficiently through donations, or do the individuals have to look for other sources of funding?
Right now everything is funded through donations though it’s not clear how feasible that is in the long term. I wouldn’t be surprised if some instances run ads in the future.
Has anyone thought about how we can bring more people over to the Fediverse?
Maturation. It’s just that most Fediverse sites outside of Mastodon aren’t ready for prime time. Lemmy just recently started getting great apps and stabilization updates. Other projects like Kbin aren’t there yet. I think it’ll take time before the Fediverse has an easy onboarding process.
I just don’t get what caused such a radical change. The EU has been at the top of caring about consumer privacy, with countries like germany even creating sweet laws like censoring most buildings from google’s street view.
Now suddenly they want to jeopardize encryption and create backdoors? What gives?
It wasn’t so much fun considering everything was broken all the time. Remember when your feed would suddenly update with about 30 old posts, pushing what you were reading way down the page? I don’t mind refreshing to see new stuff honestly.
A) They weren’t removed, this is a new document
B) As other comments mention, discrimination and harassment is covered in section 5
C) Consider messaging the admins about it rather than push the alert button and causing needless drama
Nothing was changed, it’s a new document.
I’m pretty sure the ToS only exists for legal reasons, don’t make a big deal out of this. It doesn’t mean the admins won’t ban people for discrimination. Nothing suggests their stance has changed.
I’ve said it before but active users isn’t indicative of anything really, the early numbers were inflated due to:
Bot instances before getting defederated
People instance hopping before staying on one instance (I made 3 accounts before deciding on lemm.ee, that means 2 that used to be active are now stale)
Early on there were a lot of small-ish instances that died off over time as people moved to more stable ones
Comments and posts are a much better indicator but it’s still not entirely accurate since it’s hard to tell how much of that is spam. I think it’d be nice if people stopped obsessing over graphs and just chilled out. I dumped Reddit a few months ago and it’s been pretty nice here.
You can use Alexandrite regardless of instance by using the official webpage for it: https://alexandrite.app/ . That’s what I’m using right now.
You’d add your instance link after the /, so in your case it’s https://alexandrite.app/feddit.uk . You’ll automatically be redirected if you log in anyways though, which is nice.
Huh, maybe I should switch to kbin/mbin then
