all 3 of the suggestions work as all those parts of speech (“how do I bedazzle my desktop”, “check out my bedazzle”).
If English is your second language then fair enough, otherwise wow what a skill issue

sadly of course “pcmasterrace” went the other direction, polling a bunch of self-selected edgelords about the name went about as expected
evidence points to “Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancements” being a “backronym”, an abbreviation that was invented after the word was already in usage – have you ever heard anyone calling an american or european car a “rice”?
anyway, happily the c/unixporn moderator didn’t agree that it’s possible for people not targeted by a racist term to reclaim it for themselves, and that it’s not the responsibility of folks pointing out a word’s bigoted history to find an alternative, and racist terminology is now banned 😌
I don’t agree that it’s wrong to write out slurs when talking about reclaiming them, but I edited the post out of solidarity for your experience.
most semi decent Lemmy instances filter out slurs
us queer people use “fa__ot” for ourselves all the time, other people don’t get to, great example 👏
or the english teacher who tried to tell my class that “rap” was “rhythm associated poetry” 😆
yes, using bigoted terminology throughout tech is a great example of the cyberpunk DYSTOPIA that fiction warned us about.
meanwhile, in the political side of punk, we’re antiracist and finding new words is the least we can do
I was going to make this post myself, thank you 😍
this is the kind of thinking that gave us names like “pcmasterrace”. words mean things, their origins matter
step 1: go to your favourite search engine
step 2: type “origin of the term ricing”
step 3: ignore the results relating to soap, cooking, or the adorable-but-wrong backronym “Race Inspired Car Enhancements”
step 4: discover that “ricing” was a) originally used as an insult (shitty cars with lots of mods) and b) referencing people from east Asia cos, yknow, japanchinesekorean people like rice
step 5: stop using the word in the context of “mods”
step 3 takes some nuance, fair enough
the word “rice” in this context has a super racist history and I beg you to look it up and then stop using it.
nice desktop tho
o jeez how could i have forgotten to mention the apex/nadir of this tragic farce, the .io
extension? It belongs to the Chagos Islands, the residents of which the British government forced to leave in the 1970s so that the land could be given to the USA for a military base. The UN voted to ask the International Court of Justice to rule on whether the British government should give the islands back to the people who were removed, the ICJ said yes, the government of the failed state that is the UK (presumably under orders from their inverted colonial masters, the government of the failed state that is the USA) continues to tell everyone to fuck off.
Meanwhile, guess who manages the .io
TLD, and collects the profits from .io
domain registrations? The UK government! 🎉☠
@JubilantJaguar@lemmy.world if you’re going to campaign on “respect for internet architecture” with TLDs, maybe start with the 9,999 techbros directly funding land theft through their mostly-very-shitty .io
domain names, and leave the folks making Marxist-Leninist jokes (or phishing the US military lol) to enjoy .ml
.
counterargument: TLDs have been a corporate-minded, US-centric joke since they were invented, the joke got even worse when ICANN wouldn’t hand over authority to the UN, worse still with the naked cash grab / branding exercise that was gTLDS (remember the shakedown that was .xxx and .sucks?) and now that .amazon belongs to a creepy oligarch’s predatory monopoly instead of the countries containing the ancient giant life-giving rainforest of the same name they may as well just change all TLDs to .clown and let DNS die in peace
Hey what’s a good response to “can’t we just ‘silence’ threads.net instead”?
using the word “rice” like that is banned in this community because of the term’s racist history. commenting in case you’d like to edit it before the post gets reported
