OK. I’m not claiming google isn’t trying. I’m claiming it doesn’t matter, and this is a solvable problem for end users. Most others in this thread are saying just FF and ublock does it, so I probably have overkill going on.

I only know this is happening with Youtube recently because of seeing other people talk about it.

FWIW, with Firefox on Linux with pihole on my network and ublock origin, some component (or the mix) of those things seems to have meant that so far I have yet to experience a single one of the things Google has been doing since the adblock wars began again. I just checked now to see if there was any delay, and there is not.

I haven’t seen a single popup, nor a single warning, no slowdowns, and no ads. I installed freetube in preparation for getting screwed, and although I like it, ad-wise and speed-wise it’s no different than hitting youtube directly.

I kinda thought the ever-expanding acronym problem was being informally solved by a gradual transition to just saying “Queer.”

I am not a member of any of the groups that would fall under that categorization though, so I may be wrong.

Controversial case after controversial case exposes police lies by their own bodycam, security cam, or bystander cam.

Police clearly do lie, and rarely do I read an article that involves those lies being corrected without them being forced to acknowledge them by video from a camera they don’t or can’t control.

Walter Scott was the first lesson I learned this way, and I could not even begin to count how many like that since then just that I personally have become aware of. (And I somehow doubt I am aware of them all)

Nothing to add except to also point out that even where there are consequences, these are usually settlements paid by taxpayers. No incentive to change behavior when there’s no impact even at the departmental level.

There’s no reason to stay with the out of the box look. Nearly everything is customizable and/or replaceable with an alternative.

I think the issue is that there’s a slow trickle of people who have just gotten in and go “Wow I just got in, has anyone got any tips?”

Find one or more feeds you like and pin them. I use the newly created For You feed (which algorithmically puts stuff there it thinks you will like) and a couple of topical feeds that are specific to my interests. I think it’s great. Way more content that I care about than there ever was on twitter, and way way more engagement between folks.

I’m a big proponent of Mastodon/Firefish in general, but while they win in volume, Bluesky is already pulling ahead for me in signal to noise ratio. (I think that’s very subjective to what things interest you, so YMMV.)

Any word CAN be, but in this case you have a group of people telling you it IS hurtful to them. Those aren’t the same thing.

Decades ago it (in my experience) originated from the use of usually gaudy non-performance enhancements to Japanese or other foreign cars (mostly originally Hondas IIRC) to make them look fast or faster without actually doing anything to make them fast. (gigantic rear spoilers, loud exhaust, neon underlights, etc)

In a pretty short time it bled into doing the same to any slow car (I think it was mostly Hondas to start) because so many people were doing it to Honda Civics at the time, then I think (again this is just in my own usage at the time) into usually gaudy non-performance enhancements to ANY car.

There’s probably also some connection to “rice burners” which I think predates the word, which I first heard applied to motorcycles, again Japanese brands like Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and then later sometimes to cars from similar brands.

The racism in “ricing” comes from the idea that since the original targets of the term tended to be Japanese or other asian cars (Kia, hyundai) and with the perception that rice is closely associated with those cultures – “ricing out” your car essentially meant “covering it with gaudy fripperies like those Japanese cars.”

I understand why some folks think it’s racist, and I understand why some folks don’t, but I don’t use the term anymore because I decided it wasn’t that hard to use another word, and just because I don’t think it’s hurtful that doesn’t mean it isn’t to someone.
