  • In this case, I would argue MimicJar’s point (Edit: Shit, I didn’t notice who I’m talking to. Well, you make good points I guess, lmao), and say that even if we were to defederate with the large instance, we’re still no worse off than if we had never federated in the first place - in fact, we’d likely be better off, since any anti-nazi users in your scenario would know where to find us.

The way I look at it is like, if Reddit were part of the Fediverse, they would’ve dominated in much the same way as Threads intends to. But the moment they even started pulling sketchy tactics, we could’ve jumped to other instances.

I mean, that’s essentially what I did anyway, but with no clearly defined alternative, not everyone knows about the Fediverse, whereas they would’ve had that option if Reddit was federated. Plus, in theory, I’d still be able to view and interact with Reddit content from my instance, at least until they separate entirely - at which point (again) I would have the choice.

I personally believe that, given the choice, many people would decide to support smaller federated instances over corporate monoliths. Not most, but many.

  • I legitimately don’t know, I normally consider Reuters to be a good source of news, or I wouldn’t have bothered clicking it in the first place.

I don’t think they necessarily have some grand plan, but I can’t just idly accept them telling us our country is in decline when their own data is telling the exact opposite story.

If anything, I guess I question their motives here because I believe they’re competent. If this was some random blog, I’d write it off as ignorance.

  • You mean that tiny uptick in percentage, after an unprecedented drop surrounding a global pandemic? That ~0.02% change? The second-lowest rate of emigration since 1990? The rate, which has actually ticked slightly downward in the last year - going by the graph in the article?

The data in this article only looks bad from one very narrow and very specific angle. From every other perspective, it’s a story of success for immigrants, showing that Canada is retaining newcomers at a rate that hasn’t been seen in over 30 years.

  • (Reposting my comment here for posterity:)

    First: The word is “emigration.”

Second: The article itself points out why this article is bullshit:

To be sure, emigration as a percentage of Canada’s overall population touched a high of 0.2% in the mid 1990s, and currently stands at about 0.09%, according to official government data.

The whole time I was reading the article, I’m thinking “Right… if you let in a record number of immigrants, then the number of emigrants is going to rise shortly thereafter. There’s just more people. You need to look at percentages to draw any real conclusion.”
Honestly wasn’t expecting them to give the percentage like that, showing that this article is nothing but fearmongering.

  • I’ve seen a few posts today from people complaining about being banned for promoting Lemmy.

Imo, the way to promote Lemmy isn’t by spamming “JOIN LEMMY”, but rather by meaningfully engaging in the community, and looking for ways to naturally bring up the positive points of this platform.

Like, if I saw a bunch of straight up ads for Lemmy (like this), I wouldn’t be here now. I joined because people were having actual, real conversations and recommending Lemmy as an alternative to Reddit. That’s what we need to “advertise”: Good, engaging conversations.

  • Agreed.

There are about 40M people in Canada.
Presumably, all of them eat food.
Granted, not everyone shops at the same chain, but for quick/easy math, let’s say ~25% (10M) shop at “GroceryCorp”.
If GroceryCorp fixes prices by just $1 per shopping trip, they will make an extra 10M.
If we assume biweekly shopping trips, that’s an extra $20M per month of stolen money.

These numbers are all very generously underestimated ($1?? I wish), and this corporation still nearly breaks even in one single month of price gouging. This has been going for years.

I almost hesitate to say this bill is better than nothing, even. Those responsible need to be subject to prison, not some mildly bigger slap on the wrist ffs.
